The month of May tells five love stories. May, a month of blooming green dreams and beautiful hopes. In this month, there are many whom we should love and thank. Please don’t forget to add love to your busy life. Love will make your May warmer.

1. 놀보와 마당쇠(놀보 심술 ~ 흥보 쫓겨나는 대목) / 남원 민속국악원 단막창극

“놀보란 놈이 본대 심술이 사나운 데다가 그 착한 동생을 쫓아내야 되겠는디 어찌해야 쫓아낼꼬.”

흥보가의 초입으로 놀부의 익살스런 심술이 잘 드러나는 대목이다. 가진 것은 많지만 심술궂은 형인 놀보가 가난하지만 착한 동생인 흥보를 내쫓는 내용을 담고 있다.

Adding Love ONE: "Mountain" composed by Junho Lee

This is a presentation of a work by composer Junho Lee that is dedicated to his master Jeong-su Kim (also know by his pen name, Sojeong), which pays tribute to his master, who has held his position silently, like a mountain. It is composed of rhythmic changes and jazz-melodies, and is a through-composed piece that is not broken into movements, expressing playful motifs through a harmony of silence and motion.

2. 매품 파는 대목 / 국립국악원 민속악단

“아이고 여보 영감, 중한 가장 매품 팔아 먹고산다는 말은 고금천지 어디서 보았소.” 흥보가 단돈 몇 푼을 벌기 위해 죄지은 남을 대신해 관가에 가서 곤장을 맞는 대목이다.

Adding Love Two: "Pensive sister", "Our family nickname", and "Beautiful world".

Sinan-gun is located at the southernmost point of the Muan peninsula, in Jeollanamdo. In this place, which is composed of approximately 830 large and small islets, 11 children who have refined their voices in the company of nature started visiting Seoul. Let's listen to a children’s gugak song that gives the feeling of the warm affection between family members, and Hak-gi Park’s "Beautiful World," sung by the clean and pure voices of the children’s choir from Jido Elementary School, which is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year.

3. 제비노정기 / 국립국악원 민속악단 가야금병창

“흥보 제비가 보은표 박씨를 입에다 물고 만리 조선을 나오는데 이렇게 나오는 것이었다.” 흥보에게 은혜를 입은 제비가 강남에 갔다가 이듬해 박씨를 물고 다시 흥보네 집으로 날아오는 대목이다. 가야금 반주에 맞추어 가야금 병창으로 선보인다.

Adding Love Three: "Asian Flower", "Miryang Arirang", and "One million rose blossoms"

IS, which released its first full album "Step One" in 2006, and has expanded its sphere of activity into broadcasting and performance, is a group of triplets who play gayageum, geomungo, and haegeum. With the unique combination of simultaneously singing and playing gugak instruments, the live performance of IS will give you an opportunity to see the special love between family members while they interact with one another.

4. 흥보 박타는 대목 / 소리: 남상일, 어린이

“흥보가 박 세통을 따다 놓고 우선 먼저 한통을 따는데.” 흥보가의 가장 대표적인 대목으로 돈과 쌀이 끊임없이 쏟아져 나와서 흥보가 부자가 되는 내용이 펼쳐진다. 다양한 사설과 아기자기한 짜임새가 돋보이는 대목이다.

Adding Love Four: "Mother" composed by Sang-gu Kang, and "Sarang-ga" arranged by Sung-won Gye

Composed by Sang-gu Kang, "Mother" expresses the love of a mother that we endlessly miss, through a touching and emotional melody. "Sarang-ga," which is one of the most popular scenes of pansori, is newly presented with accompaniment from a gugak orchestra. Let’s listen to the beautiful love story, with the voice of Joo-eun Lee from NCKTPA Folk Band.

5. 화초장 ~ 제비 후리러 나가는 대목 / 남원 민속국악원 단막창극

“그 속에 뭐 들었느냐? 은금보화가 들었습지요.” 흥보가 부자가 되었다는 소식을 들은 놀보가 동생에게 화초장을 얻어 가지고 집으로 돌아가는 대목이다. 결국 제비가 오지 않자 직접 제비를 몰러 나간다.

Adding Love Five: "Happy Walk" composed by Jeong-myun Lee, and "Our Beautiful Country" composed by Tae-soo Han

"Happy Walk" is based on a memory from the composer’s youth, in which he drew a picture on paper and his family went for an outing altogether. The piece gives us a warm feeling that reflects the hope that all people can have happy lives. "Our Beautiful Country" was composed by Tae-soo Han, who is active in a variety of fields, from popular songs and dramatic music to gugak. The piece splendidly expresses the beauty of this nation and this land.
